Hidden Mini Cameras
Mini cameras are small and portable devices that provide covert surveillance. They can be battery-powered or AC-powered. This gives you the flexibility to record high-definition video wherever you need it.
Home security cameras are very similar but stand out to any visitor. Spy cameras are great when you don't want someone to know they're under surveillance. Often, seeing a camera will change people's behavior. In this case, you may not capture their true intentions. They may disable any visible cameras before committing whatever act they had planned.
A hidden camera works like any standard digital camera. The difference is it's designed to be much smaller. Due to the size concealing them is much more manageable.
Spy cameras are often disguised as smoke alarms, lightbulbs, or clocks. They and inconspicuous and so small they can be tough to detect. There are even James Bond-style wearable cameras if you need something more portable. These wearable cameras can record on the move.
Some examples are button cameras that blend into your clothes. These look like any regular jacket button. There are also pen cameras and other wearable cameras. These can be built into hats, bags, brooches, or other items.
The best mini cameras are small enough to hide in unexpecting locations. The places you'd never think to look for a camera so they won't draw attention to themselves.
Other than size and how easy they are to conceal, there are some additional features to look for. Keep these in mind when buying a spy camera.
Wide Angle Cameras
You want the camera to have a wide field of view. The wider the field of view, the more of its surroundings it can capture. If you get a very wide-angled camera, the image can distort. Some 180 or 360-degree cameras have what's known as a fisheye lens. They are good on a wall or ceiling to cover a large area.
Resolution is essential with most cameras. But, this doesn't matter quite so much with spy cameras. That's because you are more interested in the content than the best crisp 4K recordings.
Processing 2K or 4K video takes a lot more power, and the file sizes take up a lot of storage space. There is no need to record in UHD when 1080P or 720P more than suffices.
Night Vision and Motion Detection Cameras
A few other features are good to have but not imperative. If you want to record at night, then night vision, motion detection, and IR Cut are valuable. But, if you're recording in a well-lit area, these may be more than you need.
Wireless connectivity to your mini DVR camera means that you can watch or even record the feed live remotely. This is excellent for covert surveillance. The reason being is it saves you from accessing the camera's TF card when you want to view the recordings.
Popular Uses for Mini Spy Cameras:
- Parents who want to keep an eye on what their children are doing while they aren't home
- Homeowners looking to protect their properties against vandals and thieves
- Business Owners who need to watch their office or cash registers.
- Private Investigators with covert video surveillance needs
- Law Enforcement Officials who need to capture their on-duty activities
- Anyone looking to have a small camera ready to capture candid video
Motion Activated Vs. Continuous Recording?
Motion-activated cameras begin recording whenever motion is detected. This could be someone walking into the room or past the camera lens.
Motion detection allows the cameras to conserve battery life and not fill up the storage with needless recordings. Sometimes you want a continuous recording, whether there is motion or not.
Can Cameras Record in the Dark?
Cameras are usually designed to record in normal lighting conditions. We also have cameras that can record in low light using IR Night Vision technology.
Where are Videos Saved?
Video (and images, for those that take still photos) are either saved on removable TF Cards or, in some cases, on internal flash memory.
Suppose the files are stored on internal flash memory. In that case, you'll need to connect the camera to your computer to view and copy the videos. Cameras with removable memory cards allow you to remove the card and insert it into a card reader. You can also use the connection cable the device comes with to view the files from your computer. Some devices with Wifi allow for remote monitoring, recording, and storing files from a smartphone partner app.
